Cooperative Education Requirements
Requirements for participation in the engineering cooperative education program are as follows:
- Applicant must attend one co-op application
workshop prior to enrolling in the program.
- Applicant must be an undergraduate, degree-seeking, FAU student with a declared major in the College of
Engineering and Computer Science.
- Applicant must not be currently on a TA or RA contract with their academic department.
- Applicant must maintain an FAU cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5 at all times.
- Applicant must obtain departmental approval and meet all departmental requirements.
- Applicant must read, understand, and agree to abide by the co-op work/study plans.
- Application for co-op assignments and academic credit must be completed through the Engineering
Career Development (ECD) Office, (S&E 103).
- Transfer students must complete one semester at FAU before applying to the co-op program.
The following additional requirements are for international (F1) students:
- Applicant must have been on F1 status while enrolled in an American college/university
for twelve (12) months, and have completed one (1) semester in their current program at FAU before
beginning a co-op assignment.
- Applicant must obtain approval of the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) and meet all
USCIS (formerly BCIS and INS) requirements.
- Per USCIS requirements International students must register and pay for one credit in order to participate in
Curricular Practical Training (CPT).
After the above requirements have been fulfilled co-op students are responsible for work attendance, academic
objectives, and term papers as designated by their department co-op advisor. The core curriculum and degree
requirements of a co-op student are the same as specified for a regular student in the co-op's major.
Co-op credit may be used for elective courses as determined by the relevant academic department. As a participant
in co-op student's must notify the ECD office of any changes or issues concerning their co-op assignment.
Additional Information:
- Any student who is on a research or teaching assistantship is not eligible to co-op at any time.
